President Obama has delivered a special election night message, as he reflected on an “exhausting” and “sometimes downright weird” election campaign.

In the video posted on twitter by Buzzfeed, Mr Obama praised the “rowdy and raucous” American democracy, as he reminded voters that the country has been through “tough and divisive elections before” and “always come out stronger”.

Appealing to the American people to reunite after the bitter election campaign, he said it was “important” people do not see each other as “simply Democrats of Republicans, but as fellow Americans”.

He finished by saying: “Remember, whatever happens the sun will rise in the morning and America will still be the greatest nation on Earth.”
