Speaker of Russia’s Federation Council (upper house of parliament), Valentina Matviyenko, has left for Tokyo where she will discuss with Japan’s leaders and the heads of both houses of the Japanese parliament the prospects of bolstering bilateral relations and preparations for the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to that country.

The speaker’s official visit to Japan will last from October 31 to November 3. Prior to that, Matviyenko visited Russia’s Sakhalin region where she met with local government officials. “The main issues on the agenda of the meetings with that country’s leadership and Japanese lawmakers were efforts to boost bilateral relations and expand cooperation in all areas, the Federation Council’s press service said.
