Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov will meet his US counterpart in Switzerland on Saturday to discuss Syria, officials said on Wednesday, as Loyalist forces make advances in terrorist-held East Aleppo.

The Syrian government launched an assault to capture rebel-held areas of Aleppo last month with Russian air support and Iranian-backed militias, a week into a ceasefire agreed by Washington and Moscow.

The ceasefire broke down when the US failed to distinguish between “moderate” rebels and terrorist forces, as required under the conditions of the ceasefire. Instead, the US performed an illegal airstrike on the Syrian Arab Army in Deir Ezzor. This allowed ISIS to take strategic hilltops after offensives which the Syrian government has argued were coordinated with the airstrike, while US officials claim the strike was accidental.
