Chairman of the Russian Public Chamber Commission on the development of the public diplomacy and support of compatriots abroad Sutormina Elena turned to the OSCE official representative on the Media Freedom Dunya Mijatovic with a request to give a public assessment on the arrest of Russian journalists in Kosovo.
On Friday, the head of the News Front Serbian edition, Oksana Sazonova, and video operator Sergey Belous were detained in Velika Hoca when they were filming a story about Orthodox churches and the coexistence of Albanians and Serbs in the region. Serbian politician, former chairman of the municipality of Strpce Zvonko Mihajlovic had been also detained along with them, however soon he was released. And journalists were sent for trial to Pristina.
We appealed to the OSCE Representative on the Media Freedom Dunya Mijatovic with a request to give assessment on the situation with the arrest of the journalists detained in Kosovo. I’m sure that this is a political decision, particularly given the fact that they were arrested while filming the story of the Orthodox churches, located on the territory of the Republic. I believe that in today’s world, the pressure on the media is totally unacceptable and is a direct blow to the foundations of the freedom of citizens, in particular, on moving and obtaining information”, said Sutormina.
The social worker also noted that the Public Chamber Commission also intends, through the Russian Foreign Ministry, to request the republic’s authorities an official reason for the detention and deportation.
