The formation of “Georgian Legion” became part of the 25th mechanized infantry battalion “Kyivska Rus” Armed forces of Ukraine (APU), reported “Ukrinform” with reference to Legion commander Mamuka Mamulashvili.




“The”Georgian Legion” is here from the first days of the war. A law was passed, and we were able to officially join the ranks of the armed forces, and the “Georgian Legion” was integrated into the 25th battalion,” — said Mamulashvili.


He stressed that it is the first foreign unit in the ranks of the armed forces. According to Mamulashvili, the formation will also accept the Americans. “U.S. citizens are going to participate in hostilities and are members of the “Georgian Legion”. (…) We expect more volunteers from USA, who will also join us,” he explained.


In November 2015 the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has signed a law allowing citizens of foreign States and stateless persons to serve in the armed forces under the contract without obtaining Ukrainian passports.


In October 2015, the bill was supported by the Verkhovna Rada. In the explanatory note to the document noted that the aim of its adoption is to increase the fighting capacity of the armed forces and reducing the human and financial costs resulting from the conduct of hostilities”.


The self-proclaimed representatives of the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics repeatedly stated that, in addition to military and volunteer battalions, there are foreign mercenaries. In particular, they mentioned the citizens of the USA and Poland.


“Georgian Legion” — division of indefinite size and structure, involved in the conflict in the Donbass. Mamulashvili in an interview with “Kavpolit” in February 2015 said that the personnel of the Legion — “these are students who have passed the Abkhaz war, veterans, experienced fighters”.
