Gunmen attacked the university late on Wednesday reportedly detonating an explosive device and opening fire. The attack lasted 10 hours to end early on Thursday. According to earlier media reports, seven people were killed and 30 were injured in the attack. Two attackers were also reportedly killed by the police.
“The attacker used the Visually Impaired Vocational High School to enter into the university. They [the attackers] broke the entrance door by an explosive-laden vehicle,” Kabul Police Chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi said, as quoted by the TOLO News broadcaster.
According to the media, seven of the victims were students. Around 35 people have been wounded in the attack, the news outlet reported.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
The attack is the second such incident to occur at the American University in the past month. Only two weeks ago, two of the university’s foreign professors – a US national and an Australian – were kidnapped at gunpoint.
