The European Union, Russia, and NATO were the key themes of remarks to the annual meeting of heads of Finnish diplomatic missions in Helsinki by Foreign Minister Soini.

Soini stated that it is in everyone’s interest that Finland and Sweden are at the table when matters concerning the Baltic Sea region are discussed. Finland is not applying for NATO membership, according to Soini, but that possibility exists. The European security situation has major significance in considerations of this issue.

“The situation is still the same. Keeping the door [to NATO membership] open serves Finland’s security,” he told the diplomats.

Soini reiterated that Finland must see to its defense capabilities and security, and that Finland cannot be allowed to become isolated in security matters.
