Germany sees no reason to speak about the possible weakening of anti-Russian sanctions as the situation in eastern Ukraine remains tense, German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Sawsan Chebli told reporters in Berlin on Monday.

The diplomat reminded that German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier had said earlier that the sanctions could be rolled back only if there was simultaneous progress of implementing the Minsk 2 peace deal on Ukraine.

“We are far from speaking about significant progress,” Chebli said commenting on the situation in eastern Ukraine. “There is no reason to say that sanctions will be weaker tomorrow,” she said.
