The meeting between Sergey Lavrov and his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto has started in Budapest. Lavrov first held bilateral talks with Szijjarto, and the meeting later continued in the broad format.
Earlier today the Russian foreign minister also met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday ahead of Lavrov’s visit to Hungary, the Russian foreign minister plans to discuss prospects of developing bilateral relations at talks with Szijjarto and Orban. “Further steps will also be coordinated to maintain and expand mutually beneficial economic cooperation in the conditions of the ‘sanctions war’ unleashed by US and EU,” the foreign ministry said.
The sides also plan to discuss the main issues on the international agenda – situation in Ukraine, fighting against international terrorism in Syria and Iraq, Russia’s relations with NATO and EU, migration crisis in Europe.
Lavrov’s last official visit to Hungary took place on May 2-3, 2013.
In the framework of the visit, Lavrov will lay a wreath to the Soviet memorial in the central square of Budapest. Around 200,000 Soviet soldiers who died when liberating the country from Nazism are buried on the territory of Hungary.
