Pope Francis used Good Friday prayers to lament what he called Europe’s “indifferent and anesthetized conscience” over refugees as well as speak out against pedophile priests, arms dealers and fundamentalists.

The pontiff spoke to tens of thousands of Catholics at Rome’s Colosseum Friday, saying: “O Cross of Christ, today we see you in the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas which have become insatiable cemeteries, reflections of our indifferent and anesthetized conscience.”

The pope has long called for Europe to open its doors to refugees, and has increased his efforts after the deal between Europe and Turkey to expel migrants arriving in Greece. Earlier Friday, the pontiff washed and kissed the feet of refugees, including Muslims, at a shelter outside Rome.
