Children in Ukraine’s Sumy region in northern Ukraine are attending a boot camp run by the extremist paramilitary ‘Azov Battalion’. The children are taught military skills and extreme-right ultra-nationalist propaganda.
The Azov Battalion is one of the many far-right paramilitary battalions that participated in the protests on Kyiv’s Maidan Square in 2013-14 or that formed after the Maidan overthrow of the country’s elected president on Feb 21, 2014. Beginning in the summer of 2015, the battalion has earned a place in Ukraine’s National Guard. That gives it access to training and weapons from the militaries of NATO alliance member countries present in Ukraine, notably from the U.S., UK and Canada.
